Trip of a Lifetime/Retirement Celebration
On this bucket-list trip, we spent three days in Nairobi, ten unforgettable days on safari across Kenya and Tanzania, followed by some much-needed beach time on the island of Zanzibar, and wrapped up our journey in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We traveled in September, 2024 during the dry season, which also coincided with the northern phase of the Great Migration. Joining us were my cousin and her husband—it was a joy to share this incredible experience with fellow adventurers.
The Adventure - A safari in September is an adventure like no other, offering an unparalleled opportunity to witness the wonders of the wild. Animals congregate around dwindling water sources, providing exceptional viewing opportunities. September also coincides with the dramatic Great Migration, where vast herds of wildebeests and zebras thunder across the plains in search of greener pastures, braving predator-filled rivers along the way. Cool mornings give way to warm afternoons, perfect for game drives that reveal lions basking in the sun, elephants moving in majestic herds, and a kaleidoscope of bird life in vibrant plumage. Have your camera ready at all times and be prepared for a lot of dusty bumpy roads.
The Ordeal - Don't drink the water! I repeat: don't drink the water!! Even being very careful not to drink the tap water, three out of four in our group became sick. It took about 24 hours to recover and we missed a few game drives.
Tips - Over-the-counter diarrhea medicine is not that effective. Ask your doctor for a prescription (Cipro for instance) instead.
