Pine Creek Gorge, AKA Pennsylvania Grand Canyon
Camping at the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, otherwise known as Pine Creek Gorge, is surrounded by cliffs and Tioga state forest. There are lovely waterfalls and the Pine Creek Rail trail along the river at the bottom is a popular attraction. As night falls, the dark sky reserve above the canyon is supposed to have a breathtaking display of stars, perfect for stargazing. But the weather did not cooperate for us.
The Adventure - We were excited about camping, biking, and hiking in the height of fall foliage (leaf peeper) season. We hiked the Golden Eagle Trail, which was challenging but rewarding. Biking the canyon, one-way downhill with an outfitter bringing us back, was a really pleasant highlight. Next time I will bring a fishing rod.
The Ordeal - We had rain in the forecast during most of our trip. Glad we had our rain gear from Iceland. The clouds didn't allow any star gazing at Cherry Springs which was a disappointment.
Tips - Be prepared for bad weather, Plan B or re-arrange your itinerary.
